Light pollution which is also known as artificial light at night (ALAN) hurts your health, your bank account and your environment, but you can take action to protect yourself.
Turn Off Unnecessary Lights – If a light isn’t needed, turn it off. Motion sensors and timers can also help.
Use Dark Sky-Friendly Lighting – Choose fully shielded fixtures that only direct light downward, not to the side or up toward the sky.
Switch to Warmer LEDs – Blue-rich light disrupts our circadian rhythms and is damaging to our health. Ideally use bulbs with a color temperature of 2200K or lower, but never higher than 2700K.
Advocate for Smarter Policies – Encourage your community to adopt responsible outdoor lighting ordinances.
Spread the Word – Educate others about how simple lighting changes can make a difference.
By following these simple principles, outdoor lighting at night can be responsible, healthy, and functional. These principles work together to reduce light pollution, save energy and money, and minimize wildlife disruption.
